Nice reviews of HEATH GREEN and The MAKESHIFTERS and MARK PORKCHOP HOLDER via BLURT

Without throwing any accusations of “authenticity” around, it really seems like coming from the American South gives Green a more natural feel for R&B, gospel and the blues, allowing him to fold his pan-seared shout into the Makeshifters’ hard-rocking crash without having to scream to be heard.

“I’ve got no one but myself to blame!” he shouts during the titanic “My Black Name,” the song most likely to be his “Jumping Jack Flash.” That lack of sentimentality gives Let It Slide the conviction to put it in a different category than the usual flash blues slop. – REVIEWS HERE

♠ Nice review of JAMES LEG “Blood On The Keys” from SLACKER RADIO

The retro milieu in which Leg works is part of his swampy mystique, and it works to his advantage as his growling vocals and dazzling organ and electric piano work coalesce in thick slabs of analog glory. Again, this is part of what drew fans to him in the first place, but the new tones he introduces here also provide the two biggest album highlights. From the start, “St. Michel Shuffle” feels different, setting Leg’s fierce growls against an odd, throbbing organ backdrop, brightly tinkling piano, and a robust gypsy-classical string arrangement. It’s dynamic, unique, and easily the most striking track on the album. – LISTEN TO SLACKER RADIO HERE

★★★½ 3 and half star review of HEATH GREEN and The MAKESHIFTERS from SPILL MAGAZINE

Straight ahead, blues based, hurting songs, played by a very talented group. But then, that is what happens when you pay your dues. Green has been playing clubs in his native Birmingham, Alabama for over 15 years before landing a record deal and the time he and his band put in shows. The band is tight and know their way around a rocking good tune. – READ THE REVIEW HERE

Nice review of DATURA4 “Hairy Mountain” from BLANK GOLD COAST

While a strong grasp of classic hooks and memorable melodies remain, this musical coming together is an altogether hairier beast. On Hairy Mountain the band lovingly channel the meatier sonic spectrum of the late 60’s and early 70’s, with cult Aussie bands such as Buffalo and The Coloured Balls springing to mind across the album’s 10 tracks. – READ THE REVIEW HERE

I94 BAR review : DATURA4 show in Sydney

No Fool’s Gold to be seen as Datura4 debuts in Sydney

It’s too easy to characterise Datura4 as “yet another Dom Mariani band” because he’s had lots of them with sustained prominence over many years. But it would also be very misleading. Greg Hitchcock has been living in Western Australia for 13 years so, from an East Coast perspective, it’s easy to have lost sight of his formidable rock and roll guitar talents. They each bring their own songs to the practice room but Dom and Greg seem like partners in the songs with arrangements evidently involving everybody’s input.

Between Hitchcock and Mariani with their combined 12 strings, there was plenty to leave you slack-jawed. Vocally, each tackles his own songs which invariably means Dom takes the poppier songs while Hitchy sings the ones with more grunt. But there’s more to Datura4 than the frontmen. Stu Loasby’s bass playing was melodic and rocking. For mine, Warren Hall on drums was Most Valuable Player tonight. His playing overflowed with swing and his mighty kick and precise fills combined to put a V-8 Hemi under the songs.

And speaking of songs, Datura4 do love to jam them out. That’s apparent on a number like “Uphill Climb”. The guitarists indulge in chunky riffing and swapping licks, rather than setting off on epic, winding, spidery leads like Neil Young or J Mascis. It’s music birthed by Aussie pub rock. And Datura4 doesn’t noodle, either. – READ THE ENTIRE REVIEW HERE
