Great 8/10 review of JAMES LEG “Below The Belt” from The BLUES
Cranked punk-blues from Texan keyboard anarchist.
Anybody who hasn’t heard James Leg or his pre-solo caterwauling grooves with Black Diamond Heavies should a) feel downright ashamed and b) give this gloriously dishevelled long-player a blast.
Below The Belt cranks out filthy, overdriven punk-rock blues with Leg’s Fender Rhodes sounding like a thousand instruments at once. His throaty vox bring to mind Tom Waits and GG Allin trading shots with a pissed-up Jim Morrison. Australians are a people who traditionally prefer their rock & roll hearty and full-bodied, and Datura4, a new combo featuring several veterans of the Aussie rock scene, certainly seem to bear this out. On their debut album, 2015’s Demon Blues, Datura4 reel off a broad range of stylistic influences that almost entirely reach back to hard and heavy sounds that enjoyed their heyday before 1974 — high-swagger boogie and blues-rock, psychedelic guitar exploration, simple first-generation hard rock, and just the slightest dash of garage rock sneer and fuzz for flavoring. Demon Blues is really a template for this band’s expansive live shows, which are proof enough that great rock dwells where experience and expertise meet inspiration.
Australia’s west coast is still producing the most excellent bands and there’s nothing tame about this one, Datura4 show you can have your cream and eat it too.

The baritone beast that is James Leg (aka John Wesley Myers of the Black Diamond Heavies) is back with an eternally powerful offering of hypnotic, distortion gospel-blues and cement-hearted rock-n-soul. Working his trademark Fender Rhodes piano into a tizzy backed by drums and guitar tones to wake the dead, Below The Belt feels as if Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart, and Booker T and the MGs played the party that accidentally burned down Junior’s Place on April 6, 2000 in Culahoma, MS and engraved that night onto vinyl. Pulling no punches is evident from the get go with album opener “Dirty South”. Leg steers a beautifully distorted, heavily chorused Rhodes progression backed by a crafty drumbeat with a lyrical delivery reminiscent of the dark lord himself. Add in some choice piano fills and you just started off the purest rock record of 2015.
